When to Buy a Full Size Mattress

A full size mattress is typically 53″W X 75″L. A full is also know as a double. Full sizes should be considered carefully before making a decision. Here are a few questions to ask yourself:

1. Will this bed be sleeping one person only?

2. Is the person who will be using this bed shorter than 5’6″?

3. Is the person using this bed expected to remain under 5’6″ for the next 5 years? I know that’s an odd question, but read on and you’ll see why that’s important.

If you answered yes to each of these questions, then a full size mattress might work for you. Full sizes are usually most comfortable for single sleepers under 5’6″. Since you will be keeping the bed for awhile, you should keep in mind the growth expectation of the person you are buying it for.

If you are buying the mattress for a young teen who is already 5’5″, this is probably not the best mattress for them. Consider a queen size or a double long. A double long size is offered by some manufacturers but not all. The double long would provide you with additional length as the name implies.

A queen size would provide additional width and length but may be too big for a child or teen’s room.
